The Human Cost

Spotting AI isn't just a party trick—it's a civic duty. As the lines between truth and fiction blur, the consequences of believing a fake become real.

The Threat Landscape

Generative AI democratizes the ability to create convincing lies. What required a Hollywood VFX studio 10 years ago can now be done by a teenager on a laptop.

Political Disinformation

Fake images of politicians being arrested, embracing enemies, or engaging in corrupt acts can swing elections before fact-checkers can intervene.

Non-Consensual Imagery

The creation of fake explicit material (NCII) targets women disproportionately, causing immense psychological and reputational harm.

The Law is Catching Up

Is it legal to generate a fake image of a real person? The answer is... complicated.

  • USACurrently, there is no federal ban on deepfakes, though states like California have passed laws against their use in elections and pornography.
  • EUThe EU AI Act requires clear labeling of AI-generated content. If you make it, you must mark it.
  • ChinaStrict regulations require all "deep synthesis" content to be watermarked and linked to a verified real-name identity.

Your Responsibility

As a trained spotter, you are the first line of defense.

The Spotter's Code

  • Pause before you share. Emotion is the hacker's access key. If an image makes you angry, double-check it.
  • Educate, don't ridicule. When someone falls for a fake, show them the signs (hands, eyes) rather than calling them stupid.
  • Support provenance standards. Advocate for C2PA and Content Credentials in your organization.
