The Uncanny Valley

AI struggles with the precise topology of the human body. While it can render a convincing "texture" of a person, the underlying structure often mistakes probability for biology.

The Hand Problem

Hands are the most notorious AI failure. Why? Because in training data, hands are rarely seen flat and open. They are holding cups, waving, clenching fists, or partially hidden.

  • Polydactyly: The "Six Finger" glitch. AI doesn't know humans have a limit of 5.
  • Knuckle Erasure: Fingers often look like smooth sausages without joints.
  • Palm Merging: Fingers often sprout from the wrist or merge into the palm.

Ocular Asymmetry

The "Windows to the Soul" are often where the illusion breaks.

Pupil Shape

Real pupils are perfect circles. AI pupils often have jagged edges aka "amoeba shape."

Catchlights

The reflection in the eye MUST match the light source. If one eye has a window reflection and the other has a studio light, it's fake.

The Piano Key Problem

Humans have distinct teeth—incisors, canines, molars—in a fixed count. AI tends to draw a row of identical white rectangles, like piano keys, because it learned "smile" as a texture rather than a structure.

  • Too Many Incisors: Count the front teeth. Six identical incisors means a generator.
  • The Uni-Tooth: A continuous white strip with faint vertical lines instead of individual teeth.
  • Sliding Midlines: The gap between the front two teeth should line up with the nose. AI smiles often drift sideways, and the gum line smears into a blurry pink band.

Plastic Skin

Real skin has pores, fine hairs, scars, and asymmetric blemishes. Because generators are trained toward "aesthetic" images, they polish all of that away, leaving a waxy, mannequin-like surface.

The Pore Test

Zoom in on the cheeks, nose, and forehead. A real photo at portrait distance shows pore texture; AI skin looks like a blurred cosmetics ad.

The Clay Wrinkle

On older subjects, AI wrinkles look carved into a smooth clay surface—deep, clean cuts without the micro-texture of genuinely aged skin.

Watch the shine, too. Real skin absorbs some light; AI skin often has a uniform gloss, like a 3D-rendered game character.

Hair Logic

Hair is thousands of independent strands obeying gravity and wind. Generators approximate it with a solid "helmet" or a chaotic mass—and the strand-level logic falls apart under inspection.

  • Trace a Strand: Follow one lock from root to tip. AI hair often starts on the scalp and ends as part of a scarf, a collar, or the background.
  • Misty Tips: Real hair ends in clean points; AI hair frequently fades into a blurry haze.
  • Anti-Gravity Bangs: Strands that float or hover with no wind source, or bangs that don't connect to the scalp at all.

Common Manifestations

The 7-Finger Wave

A politician waving to a crowd—but a quick count reveals six or seven fingers on the raised hand.

The Shark Mouth

A smiling subject with far too many teeth, or several rows of them, packed into a normal-width mouth.

The Shape-Shifter

One eye almond-shaped with thick lashes, the other rounder with sparse lashes, subtly distorting the face.

The Hair Scarf

A long strand of hair that wraps around the neck and becomes the fabric of a scarf or shirt collar.

Field Checklist

Before you guess, run through these checks:

    Count the fingers explicitly—never assume there are five.

    Zoom in on the pupils: are they perfectly round, and do the catchlights match between eyes?

    Count the front teeth and check the smile's midline against the nose.
  • 4
    Look for pore texture on cheeks and nose; waxy, poreless skin is a warning sign.
  • 5
    Trace one lock of hair from root to tip and confirm it stays hair the whole way.
  • 6
    Check fingernails: missing, misshapen, or facing the wrong way betrays a generator.
